It’s intense, it’s mind bending, it’s challenging, it isn’t scary but it is completely bizarre and at times baffling. They have learnt the dark arts from different places, people and cultures and have perfected this ‘gift’ so that they are able to survive on the souls of people – people with psychic abilities in order to maintain their youth and live forever. The main story arc of this book centres around two main characters – The Grayer Twins Norah and Jonah. I imagine if you didn’t have any other plans, you could easily read this in a day, maybe in half a day if you were hooked from the beginning. I found that because the chapters were fairly short, I would read one or two in a sitting. But do these people ever make it out of Slade House?…Īs with The Bone Clocks, it’s a book that does demand your attention, with words like “psychovoltage”, “Banjax – a chemical that shrivels the cord fastening from the soul to the brain”, “lacuna – immunity to time” and “suasioner” its not a book that you can necessarily pick up and put down. It centres around Slade House, a mysterious house which draws people in from a small door hidden in Slade Alley.

The books begins in the 1979 and ends in 2015. Each story takes place nine years from the last – are you following so far? Slade House is a companion piece to The Bone Clocks, there are five chapters in the book, each chapter is a story and the stories all interlink in the classic David Mitchell style.

For me, I found that it was not the easiest book to begin with, but once I found my reading rhythm with it, it blew me away! If you haven’t read it, I really recommend it.

I bought a copy immediately after, which he kindly signed and I have been a fan ever since.Ī side note – The Bone Clocks is an utterly fantastic novel, would it be too grand to call it a masterpiece? Well I am going to call it one anyway. She took me to a book signing of his and he read a few pages of The Bones Clocks. I love David Mitchell, I have my very good friend Danielle to thank for this new found love. I recently read this for one of my book clubs, it was a wildcard, Halloween choice.
